Spotting authentic vintage furniture takes a certain knowledge, and spotting the unique characteristics to the style of the time takes skill.

Vintage furniture pieces are full of distinct styles and major design trends. Some of the distinct trends include Art Deco (1920s-30s), which incorporated geometric shapes and bold colours, Italian Mid-Century (1940s-50s) which is characterised by it’s simple lines and natural materials, and then Mid Century Modern (1950s-60s) which includes newer materials, plastic and a minimalistic design. Old furniture uses higher quality wood, such as Mahogany, Walnut and Oak.

You can also tell the authenticity of a piece by its condition and wear. If a piece has notable wear in prominent parts of used areas, it’s more likely an older piece. To separate an authentic piece from a remake, look for labels and stamps, many designers have their labels on vintage furniture.
